F.A.Q.

We have provided for you the answer to some frequently asked questions we receive here in relation to our Outpatient Clinics.  Please e-mail the Institute if there is any further questions you may have and we are happy to answer them.

Changing or Cancelling your appointment

If you are unable to keep your appointment for any reason please contact the Neurology secretary (01 8034686) as soon as possible so that your appointment can be offered to another patient as our waiting lists are infinite.

Non- attendance

Patients who do not inform secretarial staff of non-attendance may lead to removal form the outpatient waiting list or require a re-referral from your GP.

Follow up appointments.

Should you require a follow-up appointment please remember to book this before you leave the OPD.

Making an appointment

New Patient
A referral letter is submitted from your GP or other Consultant and an appointment is allocated accordingly. Unfortunately waiting times can frequently extend from 12-18 months

Return patient
An appointment is made before you leave the OPD with the secretary. Alternatively if you require further investigations you are required to contact the secretary when you receive a date for the investigation requested. It is imperative that all investigations must be completed at least three weeks before your follow-up appointment to ensure we have all your results.

What to take with you:

  • Appointment Letter
  • List of medication and/or your medications
  • If you have visited any other consultant/hospital with this or other conditions it is important and beneficial that you obtain as much medical information as possible i.e. results, X-Rays or MRI scans as it will speed up the process.
  • You are welcome to bring a family member/partner or close friend with you to the consultation and we encourage this if it will make you feel more comfortable.
  • You may wish to take along a list of questions relating to your condition and investigations.

Registration:

We would like to remind you that the time given to you as a new or return patient is a registration time only and not the time you will be seen by the doctor. Patients are seen in order of time rather than in order of arrival in clinic. It is difficult to determine in advance how much time each individual patient will require with the doctor and in view of the conditions we review some may be extensive so we request your understanding. When extensive delays occur we will try as much as possible to keep you informed. We would request that you allow sufficient time for your appointment as in some clinics there may be a waiting time of up to two hours.

What to expect:

New Patients
You will be seen and examined by a member of the Neurology team; a detailed examination and medical history will be carried out (may take approximately 30-40 mins). A Consultant Neurologist will then review you.

Return Patients
You will be reviewed by a Specialist Neurology Registrar and if the situation requires you may need to be reviewed by the Consultant Neurologist. However it is not possible for all return patients to see the Neurologist at all appointments due to patient numbers.
