The Henley Mermaids are a team of ladies who undertake challenging open water swimming in aid of several charities. During this Brain Awareness Week March 15th – 21st, branding it The Big Splash, they are focusing on supporting eight charities across the UK & Ireland who are tirelessly working in the research and provision of support services for sufferers and their loved ones who deal with the four key brain conditions of Parkinson’s Disease, Motor Neurone Disease, Huntington’s Disease and Multiple Sclerosis. In the process of doing this they hope to raise awareness of the scarcity of access to neurological services most particularly in Ireland, where access to medical assistance and support services is often amongst the lowest in the Western world.

On Day 4, mermaids Joan and Laura, as they explain in the video below, focused on their support in raising funds for the Dublin Neurological Institute and particularly the work it does around Parkinson’s disease. It details how funds raised will go towards the purchase of PD monitors and the role these play in the provision of Deep Brain Stimulation in Ireland.

Please visit their blog page where they will be posting videos each day of their swimming adventures while bringing attention to critical issues around neurological care and the charities that seek to improve the provision of services.
