Mater Hospital does Strictly come Dancing

Sparkle and sequins, salsa and swing and an amazing feeling of goodwill between staff members. This is what an audience of 1000 people were treated to in the O Mahony Hall at the Helix on Friday night last. The Mater Does Strictly was held in aid of the Dublin Neurological Institute (DNI).

The diversity of departments & directorates represented was wonderful. Dancers included Consultant and non consultant hospital doctors, nurses, staff from administration, cleaning, catering, radiology, laboratory, portering and professional allied to medicine. One of the dancers remarked ‘the camaraderie throughout the entire strictly experience has been an inspiration and I think is one of the reasons for the night being so successful. The sense of togetherness spread throughout the entire hospital in the lead up to the event and exploded on the night. It was fantastic to see so many people from so many departments come together and support each other with such positivity which is one of the reasons why everyone performed so well. Everyone involved should be immensely proud of what was achieved and I am humbled to have been a little part of what the success of the true show really reflects – what a wonderful place the Mater is’ There are no more eloquent words than the above to describe the night. The event was followed by a disco which lasted until the early hours – however the dancing was not quite as polished as what we experienced earlier in the evening!

Financially the evening was an enormous success and almost €65,000 was raised for the DNI – which is based in the Mater. The funds raised will help develop the National Deep Brain Stimulation service in conjunction with the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast. Patients will have surgery in the North and pre-op and post-op care will be provided by the DNI.

We hope you enjoy the images below that show the real ‘glam, fun and energy’ of the event and as fans of the show ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ we have no hesitation in saying the talent on show at the Helix would have given the professionals and celebrities a real run for their money, we award them a heartfelt maximum points!! We have many more images to show so keep any eye on our website gallery.
