Thursday morning, 12th April was a morning we will never forget. The Centre for Brain Health, Dublin Neurological Institute (DNI) hosted a breakfast in the Cusack Suite of Croke Park. We are so grateful to Jim Gavin, Dublin Senior Football Manager for his engaging, entertaining and thought provoking presentation. With the impressive and appropriate backdrop of this magnificent stadium, the Introduction to the morning by Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh was both historic & enjoyable.
Jim’s talk drew a large and enthusiastic audience from the corporate world and covered aspects of teamwork and leadership and also gave a great insight into his work as an air corps pilot. He highlighted the fact that the organisational skills he learnt in the Army (Air Corps) were similar to the discipline used in football and all sporting activities. The most important aspect of all training is to get the process right and to realise that there is no such thing as ‘perfection’. We should always try to do better. While Jim didn’t give any secrets away it is obvious how focussed both he and the Dublin Senior Football team are as they prepare for ‘Four in a Row’
Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh, Chairman of the DNI entertained the audience with his 5 choices of the best sporting moments in GAA football and hurling. His accuracy in discussing games that were played both last year and in the 1980s were equally sharp. Micheál is a true ‘Seanchaí’ His presentations were interspersed with anecdotes & yarns which were so simple, so Irish and so amusing. He is certainly a great example of healthy ageing.
While thanking all those present for their generosity and support, Prof. Tim Lynch, Clinical Director of the DNI outlined the challenges and opportunities the DNI face while discussing his hopes for the future.
The morning was an amazing fundraising success. The combination of sport and brain injury is such an emotive subject and the morning drew great interest from the Irish / American community who made extremely generous donations towards the event.
Our calendar of annual events has a new addition and we are currently planning next year’s breakfast. Most of those present asked to be included on the list for next year.
