Golf Classic held in aid of the Dublin Neurological Institute
The 15th Annual golf classic took place on Friday 23rd September 2016 in Hermitage Golf Club, pictured above is Pauline Ward presenting the perpetual trophy to the Malin Corporation winner.
Thanks to the Lord above we have never had a bad day since this event commenced in 2002. Friday was a beautiful day – with a warm balmy breeze, however it was literally the calm before the storm. Saturday brought a heavy downpour which lasted most of the day and Sunday was a tropical day with beautiful sunshine and torrential wind and rain. The wind was so strong on Sunday that a tree fell down on the 2nd fairway during the afternoon, so we consider ourselves very fortunate and somewhat blessed that we avoided all of the elements and had a most enjoyable day.
When we come to Hermitage every year – it’s almost like coming home and always receive a great welcome and a service that is second to none. The Lady Captain Liz McHenry was present to welcome every team as they arrived. We greatly appreciated the generosity of her time. We can never forget that this golf classic was started by Ray Ward RIP and his wife Pauline – who is an active member in Hermitage. Ray was held in great esteem by his fellow members and the event is considered a prestigious occasion in his home Club.
The golf classic had been in decline over the years, but thankfully this year, we were fully booked with 27 teams. We are most grateful to those who support us year on year. Micheal O Muircheartaigh – (who is a member of the DNI Board) played in the classic and was our guest after dinner speaker. There was a great atmosphere in the room on the night and a warm sense of camaraderie among teams who battle it out against each other every year. Micheal O Muircheartaigh spoke at length about the forthcoming All Ireland Football Final Dublin v Mayo. Both the President of Hermitage – Tony Rooney and the Captain – Walter Corcoran are from Mayo. We were honoured to have their company at dinner. Needless to say they listened to every word and were extremely interested in Micheal’s predictions !
Our main sponsor was Malin Corporation and we are very grateful to them for their support. All of the holes were sponsored and we had amazing raffle prizes. Pictured below is Gay O Hea, Lady Captain in Blackbush Golf Club – who won first prize of a bike in the raffle.
However our main supporters are those who commit to taking teams, organising time out of their busy schedules to come and compete in this competition. The winners this year were as follows:
1st prize: Saltan Properties
2nd prize: Ronan Kilbride
3rd prize: Momentum
Front nine winners: Hermitage Ladies Committee
Back nine winners: Malin Corporation
Longest Drive (Men): Tom Hanlon
Longest Drive (Ladies): Mary Hackett
Nearest the Pin: Barry McCarthy
We were presented with some items which would be more appropriate for an auction than a raffle and are trying to decide on the best way to organise this auction. The items are as follows:
• A week for four people in a house in Boulogne, Italy. This house is owned by an Irish lady who gives cookery classes. She will provide half board for the 4 guests and will also provide a rented car for the week.
• A pair of Rory McIlroy’s shoes worn in one of the FedEx competitions. Shoes are signed by Rory
• A framed & signed original photo of Rory McIlroy receiving the Claret Jug at the British Open in 2014
• A meal for 30 people from Rick’s Big Pan
• Two golf caps – one signed by Darren Clarke, Captain Ryder Cup European Team, and the other signed by Paul McGinley, past Captain Ryder Cup European Team
There’s a reserve of €3K on the holiday, €600 on Rory’s shoes. €500 on Rick’s Big Pan meals, €400 on the framed signed original photo and €200 for the two caps. We will of course accept bids for the auction items – please text 087 637 6563 and we will advise you if your offer is accepted
